Charli XCX’s latest surprise has the internet in shambles.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, during the second episode of Saturday Night Live Season 51, musical guest Role Model performed his viral hit, “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out.”
If you didn’t know, Role Model (real name Tucker Pillsbury) always brings out a celebrity guest to join him on stage during this song.
On SNL, when he called out, “Where’s my Sally?” during the performance, the audience lost their minds when Charli appeared in the doorway as his guest.
Aside from the fact that Charli is hot on the scene right now, everybody couldn’t stop talking about what she was wearing. The “Everything is Romantic” singer wore a black skirt and a “Max’s Kansas City” T-shirt, with black sunglasses.
Immediately, some people speculated that her outfit was a reference to Taylor Swift, whose fiancé, Travis Kelce, plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The primary reason people would jump to that conclusion is due to the song “Actually Romantic” from Taylor’s The Life of a Showgirl. Some fans believe the song is a diss track inspired by Charli’s song from her album, Brat.
While Taylor didn’t address the rumors head-on, she did explain the lyrics of the song on an Amazon Music’s track by track, describing it as “a song about realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about.”
Well, if you’re part of the crowd that really hopes for Charli’s shirt to be a reference to all the speculated drama, you might be disappointed.
Charli’s shirt is more than likely a nod to Role Model, who wore the same top in the SNL promo.
Additionally, Role Model’s latest album is called Kansas Anymore, and Max’s Kansas City is a former New York City nightclub.
So, there are plenty of reasons for her to be wearing the shirt besides it having ANYTHING to do with Taylor and Travis, but that didn’t stop the internet from collectively freaking out. Here’s what they’re saying:
People couldn’t believe Charli was his guest. One person wrote, “God DANG!!! Did NOT expect Charli XCX to be tonight’s Sally!!!”
Someone else wrote, “CHARLI XCX AS SNL SALLY WAS NOT ON MY BINGO CARD.”
“I was expecting sally to be idk bowen yang or amy poehler but this mf brings out charli xcx,” another person shared.
My favorite response was from this person who thought Charli was Bowen’s SNL impression from Jean Smart’s episode during Season 50.
