“‘Little treat’ mentality. AKA ‘I’m alive, I made it through the day, so I deserve to do something I know isn’t good for me like I’m Pavlov-ing myself for existing.’ I’m not saying never to indulge, but there’s this mentality of ‘allowing’ yourself one moment of pleasure in exchange for a longer time of suffering that is really toxic in the long run. You don’t ‘earn’ your rewards. Everything you do is a choice. If you want a cookie, eat a cookie. But don’t do it as a reward for making a difficult phone call. You want to skip the gym because you don’t feel good, skip the gym — but don’t do it because you ‘earned’ the right to lie in bed and rot instead of doing something that will feel better in the long run.”

“Absolutely!! It’s just about taking the MORALITY out of choosing to treat myself well. I don’t ‘earn’ rest by doing awful things. I don’t ‘earn’ chocolate by eating my broccoli. I’m a grown adult, and I make the choices I decide to make.”
