I love me a good meme, and the Blinking White Guy gif has gone triple-platinum in my household and households the world over. I’ve never really taken the time to think about the man behind the meme, though. Who is this man? Why does he blink so? Is he a good person? Well, I can answer that last question at the very least, and the answer is yes.
Drew Scanlon is the man in question, and when a clip of him reviewing a video game with Giant Bomb went viral, his life changed. (If you’re curious what he was reacting to, someone in the livestream was tending to their virtual garden, saying, “I’m farming with my hoe.” The more you know!) Drew is not letting his internet fame be for naught. Participating in Bike MS, an annual bike race that raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Drew has raised over $300,000 to fund research about the disease, which affects his mother and one of his good friends. On his unexpected internet fame, he said, “It was a gift that was given to me, and I thought that I should just pay it forward.” Talk about using whatever platform you’re given! Your move, Distracted Boyfriend.
