A pleasant surprise this summer was the FX show Alien: Earth. The series was familiar but offered a new story, characters, and terrifying new possibilities. Because on Earth, we indeed can hear them scream.
Here are the 18 scariest moments from Alien: Earth:
*Spoilers Ahead*
1.
Those leech-bloodsucker-aliens taking out the two search-and-rescue guys was brutal. Body horror at its finest. The second it disappears into the helmet, you can feel your stomach drop.
2.
I loved the xenomorph hiding in plain sight on a statue in Episode 2. The scare was perfect and unexpected, as we, the audience, were led to believe it was still possible to be down some floors in the crash site.
3.
Oh yeah, and in case you forgot, xenomorphs had a second mouth; those things chomp chomp pretty fast.
4.
The Ocellus controlling the cat was nasty, but the whole scene of it attacking Nibs was as scary as it was tentacle-y.
5.
Another sudden xenomorph scare comes when Dame Sylvia turns around. I thought the alien looked its most horrifying in this scene, and I hope we get more kills in the daylight if Season 2 happens.
6.
Poor Hermit, boxed in, literally, by the Ocellus, created some great suspense. Seeing that door open and realizing the sheep was loose was chilling.
7.
In Episode 8 (“The Real Monsters”), the sudden appearance of the Xenomorph really made me think we were losing Boy Kavalier. Not that I would have been mad, but so few people have lived encountering the “perfect organism” that it was a big chill moment.
8.
Arthur loses an eye…and gains a new one. Seeing that eyeball dangling before snapping off was nasty as heck. The body horror in this show did not disappoint.
9.
The death by alien flies was probably the most delightfully disturbing kill of the entire series. The hybrid death was somehow more brutal than any human death, and poor Tootles didn’t stand a chance thanks to his sheepish friend.
10.
They unfortunately did their jobs as writers and made Arthur way too likable. The moment he was trapped with the facehugger was brutal. You wanted him to escape, but knew what was coming.
11.
Just when you think the chest-bursting effect gets played, the blood-splattering gore of Arthur’s demise was a reminder of why we all love the Alien franchise. Poor Slightly and Smee’s faces covered in blood, along with their reactions, really made it worth the wait to see a victim of the facehugger.
12.
It’s a simple scare, but every time Marcy/Wendy did the little alien chittering, it was so uncanny and wonderfully spooky. I don’t know how I feel about the idea of her being the next “Mother of Xenomorphs.” The chittering SFX definitely killed it this season.
13.
An unsung hero of horror in this series was Nibs. Every scene with her was incredibly unnerving, and even though the other “Lost Boys” are capable of horrifying things, her character always had me on the edge of my seat…especially her nearly-attacking Dame Sylvia.
14.
He’s right behind me, isn’t he?
15.
As far as body horror, seeing the little Ocellus creature’s pupil split apart was quite grotesque. Its POV was also unsettling, but every time that eyeball broke up, it made my stomach turn a bit.
16.
While it was an incredible shot, the moment of Morrow being detained and the xenomorph tearing through the people behind him was incredibly unsettling. It was a standout moment in the series for me.
17.
Siberian’s death was alarming simply because it was the one alien lifeform that kind of got swept under the rug, and then it was like: oh, btw, this thing can swallow you whole and crush your bones.
18.
And lastly, the terrifying Sid from Ice Age jumpscare.
