You know that classic icebreaker: what would you do if you won the lottery? Doesn’t have to be hundreds of millions — just enough of a windfall to totally change your situation. Most of us have answers locked and loaded. Buy a car, a house, a…plane? (I don’t know, some people’s pipe dreams could smoke out the whole block.)
Some folks have lists for days. But then there’s always that one person at the party who says, “I’d pay off my parents’ mortgage, clear my siblings’ debt, and buy everyone a car.” Yeah, these celebs have that exact same energy. Their first big purchases were so wholesome, it’s genuinely restoring my faith in humanity. Prepare yourself for some full-on audible awws.

Oprah shared in her segment of My Best Life that she bought really high-quality towels that were “so big and fluffy that you can wrap your whole body in them.” It’s giving peak Monica Geller energy and her 11 towel categories. You just know those towels would be classified as “fancy guest.”

When Tom Cruise was asked if he remembered how he spent his first Hollywood paycheck, he simply told Graham Norton, “Yeah.” Then, after a pause (dripping with mystery and allure, might I add), he revealed that he paid for one of his sisters to go to college and bought the other a car. Honestly, I wish I had Tom Cruise footing my post-grad tuition. Imagine saying, “Yeah, I was sponsored by Tom Cruise to study music production. No big deal.” It has a nice ring.

Tiffany Haddish told Time magazine, “First thing I did was go to the bank and open a checking account.” Then she “splurged” — on Snickers, lollipops, Jolly Rancher sticks, Blow Pops, corn nuts (and, tbh, a slice of humble pie). Before fame, she even dreamed of working at a Snickers factory just to steal the recipe and make them at home. I love a chaotic, candy-fueled icon.

Rami Malek did what we all wish we had the discipline to do…he bought an espresso machine to avoid spending $7–10 at Starbucks every morning. Honestly, it’s resourceful, responsible, and no doubt eco-friendly — first paycheck well spent.

Rupert Grint made a fortune playing the beloved Ron Weasley for his entire childhood. And what did he buy the moment filming wrapped? A Mr. Whippy ice cream truck. He told Jimmy Fallon that it was a childhood dream of his. “It’s the most impractical first car,” Rupert Grint told him. What a sweet-toothed sweetheart.

When Jessie J got her first No. 1 single, she didn’t splurge on something wild — she whitened her teeth. She told Graham Norton, “You think I’m joking. I’m really not,” before letting out an adorable giggle that showed off her freshly brightened smile. Honestly, what a wholesome self-care purchase. Instead of flashing her dollars, she flashed her smile.
Humanity: restored. I can now sleep peacefully at night knowing good people do exist — including you, dear reader. But before I turn this into an after-school special (yikes), tell me in the comments: What’s the first thing you’d do if you came into a windfall? Concert tickets? A car? A dream vacation? A down payment? As for me…I’d pay off my student loans in a heartbeat. Sadly, I do not have a Tom Cruise for a brother. What would you do?
