Tipping Debate Erupts After TikTok Waitress Is Fired
At a fast food restaurant in Denver, workers are speaking out about issues, such as employers only giving them a portion of the tips customers leave. Employees reported that they were only receiving 50% of the tips left via credit card.
So, this viral video by TikToker @picklejuicelover33 about a tipping situation has amassed over 2 million views. She explained that, after having good banter with a couple she was serving, the man didn’t leave a tip, so she decided to ask if her service was bad. The man accused her of being rude, and she explained that not tipping costs servers money.
Ultimately, the man ended up telling the manager about the situation, and after @picklejuicelover33 refused to apologize, she said she was fired.
This whole situation started a bigger discussion about tipping — one that wasn’t exactly expected…
Many people admitted they do not tip, and had no issue sharing their perspectives:
Some believe it is the government’s fault:
And others believe it is the restaurant who should be responsible for paying their employees better wages:
Some simply think not tipping at all would fix everything:
There are even people outside of the US looking in on the situation with no real ideas for resolution:
And other non-Americans believe it should all fall on the business owners:
On the other hand, there are people in favor of tipping who stand behind statements like this:
And also those who say tipping is something in society that is just to be expected:
So, while the below statement may be true — especially now with the extreme inflation our economy is facing — not tipping is probably going to do more harm than good for waiters who deserve to be paid decent wages. Do it for the servers! If you have thoughts, let us know in the comments.
