“When I was 10, I regularly attended a choir club for kids. One day, my dad picked me up to drive me home. I was confused because it was always my mom who did, but I didn’t think much of it until we were halfway home. My dad started mumbling about how sorry he was and how I would never see him again. Frightened and confused, I kept asking what he meant, but he wouldn’t say. When we got home, he didn’t get out of the car. Instead, he urged me to get out. Finally, he told me I wouldn’t see him again because he would be dead very soon for what he had done, and that the police would explain everything. After he practically pushed me out of the car, I rushed inside. No one was there, but the front door was open, and there was a puddle of blood on the floor. The police were nearby and explained what had happened.”
“My dad was obsessively jealous and had found a pack of old condoms in a cupboard. He concluded that my mom must have cheated on him. Never mind that we had only recently moved into the apartment and they could have been left by previous tenants, or that he controlled my mom’s every move and rarely let her go anywhere alone. The police took me to the hospital, where my mom, thankfully, was still alive.
My dad had attacked her with a full wine bottle, causing severe head injuries. The only reason she survived was that my little brother, who was seven at the time, intervened. If it weren’t for him, my dad likely would have killed her in a fit of jealousy.
When he said I would never see him again, he meant he had planned to kill himself shortly after dropping me off. He did not succeed.”
