During the film, Jake says to Quaritch, “You’ve got new eyes, Colonel, and all you’ve got to do is open them” Is there anything that the making of the Avatar films opened your eyes to?
Stephen: With so many of the issues that I think Jim is concerned with, being a custodian of the world that we live in. I’ve become more conscious of the understanding that this world is not designed exclusively for humans; there are a lot of other creatures who’ve earned their place on this planet as well, and that’s something that has evolved over the years in my own thoughts.
Sam: Well, I’ve had kids during this saga, and I think when I did Avatar one, I was a dumb grunt. Me and Jake were quite aligned, and as the saga continued and my own personal journey continued, you start to recognise themes that Jim is empathetic towards in real life. I kind of translate that back to my sons in a way because Jim’s made a story about how we’re all connected and we all have a responsibility. And now, as a dad to my sons, that’s the kind of message I’m trying to tell them. I don’t care if you’re nine or five; we’re all connected on this planet, and we should all take care of each other.
