Robin Wright Called Out America After Living Abroad, And I’m Honestly Nodding Along

Robin Wright On Living In The US Versus The UK

You may know the 59-year-old actor from her roles as Buttercup from 1987’s The Princess Bride to Claire Underwood from the award-winning Netflix series House of Cards.

My favorite role is Jenny Curran from the 1994 Robert Zemeckis film, Forrest Gump. As for the real-life role Robin’s been playing for the past few years, it’s an American living in England.

In a Aug. 30 profile with The Times U.K., Robin reflected on the differences between living in America and England and she came to a rather daunting conclusion.

“America is a shit show,” she said. According to the publication, Robin has been working and living in the Chilterns. “I love being in this country. There’s a freedom of self here. People are so kind.”

“They’re living. They’re not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That’s most of America. Everything’s rush, competition and speed,” she said.

There’s a quiet peace she’s found in this part of the U.K. versus the busy streets of Hollywood, where she’s burdened by the sound of neighbors constantly renovating their homes. “Everyone’s building a huge house and I’m just done with all that — I love the quiet. And I’ve met my person. Finally.”

There’s a give and take to her relocation, as Robin’s realized during her time in the U.K., there’s an “obsession with class,” as editor Laura Pullman writes.

“It’s very evident when you’re in a room and you feel the judgment or the praise of someone who’s more elevated,” Robin said. “I’m trying to figure it out. Why are you guys so obsessed with who went to this boarding school or this university? Who gives a shit?”

While in the U.K., Robin’s been working on The Girlfriend, a new Prime Video drama, so it’s not apparently linked to any belief toward the current political state of America — yet, her words still hit like a ton of bricks for those of us still navigating these loud, Hollywood streets. She said, “America is a shitshow,” and I heard her loud and clear.
