“Twenty to 30 years is too long a timeframe for any trend. If you study design, things will look outdated within a year or two. If you do not, you might not notice changes for five to 10 years. If you are really asking what will be out of date in the next five to 10 years, here is my take. 1) Gray floors are already out. Pale wood floors will probably be out in 10 years, but they still have a solid run left and can be re-stained. 2) Curved sofas look great now, but will feel dated in five to 10 years, which is fine because most sofas do not last that long anyway. 3) Wood shelving installed in sets of three is already out. 4) Aluminum vent hoods with shelves on either side will be out. 5) Upper cabinets tend to look dated sooner than lower cabinets, but they can always be repainted or refinished. 6) Windows will never go out of style in kitchens.”
“7) Black, green, and dark blue cabinets will shift in hue over time, but repainting is always an option. 8) Maximalism will be out in 10 years. 9) Wallpaper rarely gets more than a three-year run.
10) Lighting matters. Tiny pendants over islands are out. Large pendants update a kitchen instantly and are easy to swap out. 11) Open shelves will not disappear, but their styles will continue to change. 12) Open floor plans will probably stick around, but they will look different. 13) More color, less white.
The bottom line is that a stylish home needs regular updates. Small changes over time keep a space feeling current without requiring major renovations.”
