In 1898, the USS Maine was headed to Havana, Cuba, in order to protect American interests; however, an explosion on the boat led to the ship sinking and the death of almost everyone on board. This event was the catalyst for the Spanish-American War.
Conspiracists believe that, rather than the explosion being an accident or incited by the Spanish, it was actually an inside job done by the United States in order to have a reason to go to war with Spain.
