“I used to work at a place with a no nepotism policy. Except that the owner’s cousin was second in charge, the cousin’s wife was some higher up, her kids had all worked there at some point, the owner’s children all had high positions, etc. In my department, there was my boss, her daughter, and her mom — none of them got along. The daughter was technically my subordinate, but I had no authority to make her get her work done.”
“I ended up starting a spreadsheet to track our work and found that I was doing 80%. Her mom said, ‘You’re the coordinator, you should be doing more.’ Never mind the fact that I had other duties outside of the one we shared. At one point, I went to my boss to ask if she wanted me to ask someone else to help me catch up since it was 2 p.m., the day before a check run, and I needed invoices processed. Once again, her daughter wasn’t there. She started calling me a liar. I took her to my office to prove that wasn’t the case at all. She made her daughter work all night to catch up since she had lied to me. There were never any consequences, though. Daughter was let go in a layoff, but I know her mom fought for her position.”
