“At an all-boys boarding school, my dorm had a hazing tradition called ‘Naked Bible Reading,’ where the shower doors are sealed up, and the showers are left to run on the hottest temperature to make it steamy. Select freshmen were told to strip naked and put on a towel. They were then led into the steamy bathroom and greeted by a number of upperclassmen, also clad in towels. The Master of Ceremonies was typically a senior wearing the house jacket and holding a waterproof, pink Bible. (The house jacket is a neon paisley smoking jacket that’s handed down each year.) He’d then read a Bible verse — it didn’t matter which one, as long as it was obscure and a bit disturbing. Then, after a few seconds, the MoC would stop reading and close the Bible. The upperclassmen removed their towels and revealed they were wearing bathing suits.”
“Meanwhile, the initiates kept their towels on the whole time and were sworn to secrecy about the true nature of Naked Bible Readings. The newly initiated would then continue to perpetuate the rumor about weird, homoerotic rituals, thus ensuring that future initiates and other dorms are adequately scandalized.”
