“A person or persons unknown collected the jack-o’-lanterns and pumpkins from virtually every porch in my small town after everybody had gone to bed. They then somehow gained access to the local high school and filled almost every flat surface in the school office, principal’s office, and teachers’ lounge with pumpkins. The following school day, officials were livid. They claimed a lot of resources were spent to clean up the mess and dispose of the waste. The smell of rotting pumpkins lingered for weeks, despite the custodian’s best efforts. Threats were made, and bribes were attempted in an effort to find those responsible. The perpetrators remained silent and apparently never bragged about it, because there was never anything more than rumors, conjecture, and suspicion.”
“Nobody was ever punished for the Great Pumpkin Caper of 1988, and to this day, students from that era still speculate about the identities of the pranksters.”
