We all know that once you get a taste for certain things in life, it’s tough to go back. Redditor Phase_zero_X asked, “What is a luxury you can never go back from once you’ve experienced it?” Here’s what people said.
1.
“A comfortable bed. My husband and I really splurged on our most recent mattress, and I mean really splurged, but gosh darn it, it feels good to lie down. The unexpected downside is that now every bed feels inferior, even bougie hotels and Airbnb’s don’t hit the same.”
2.
“Business class on flights over eight hours. It’s another world if you can actually lie down. But so dang expensive…”
3.
“A minimal commute to work. I just changed jobs, and my commute dropped from 90-120 minutes to 20-30 minutes, and I feel like I have my life back.”
4.
“A housekeeper. You’re not just paying for a clean house, you’re buying back your mental health.”
5.
“Living in a high trust society like Japan. If I lose something, I can rest assured that the police station has it or will have it in a day or two. I can leave my bag on the table or anywhere and expect it to still be there and nothing tampered with.”
6.
“A garage. I live in a place that gets a lot of snow. I didn’t have a garage until I was in my late 20s, and I will never have a house without one now. It still baffles me that there are people who have a garage and don’t park their car in it.”
7.
“If you’re with a partner, a King-size bed.”
8.
“Working from home. I’ve been working from home for about 11 years now and there’s almost no amount of money (to a point) that would make me go back to the office.”
9.
“Not having to look at prices when buying groceries. This is my personal definition of “rich.” I am not swimming in money, but I don’t have to think about it all the time
10.
“A dishwasher. An even greater luxury is obviously having two dishwashers, so that you can keep going back and forth between them and never having to put anything in the cabinet again.”
11.
“Living alone! Less drama and lots of peace, with the space exactly how you want it. One of the rarer and most expensive luxuries, too.”
12.
“Hiring professional movers. For $250, two guys moved all my belongings out and into my new place, and minus drive time, it took maybe two hours. I had a narrow hallway and a massive sectional. That was literally what slowed us down. Worth it. Prior moves I had so many people all say oh I’ll help you move and then show up late, dip early, not stay on task or do much. It took forever. This was worth it.”
13.
“Keeping your house at a temperature that’s comfortable. I grew up in poverty, so early in life we skimped a lot or even went without sometimes due to not being able to afford electricity. I always told myself one of my goals was to be able to comfortably afford keeping the temperature where I wanted it, to never have to compromise my comfort in my own home. When I could finally do that, I reveled in it.”
14.
“Real butter. I will not touch margarine. In fact, I don’t even like to look at it.”
15.
“Decent noise-cancelling headphones for air travel.”
16.
“An electric car. Never having to fill up at a petrol station in my daily life is a game-changer.”
17.
“Airport lounges. Once my wife introduced them to me, it’s hard to go back to anything else.”
18.
“Real maple syrup. I remember the day I first ate pancakes with real, pure, maple syrup. I literally never touched a bottle of ‘breakfast syrup’ or Mrs.Butterworth, ever again. It is expensive, but I spend the money to buy mini jars/packets that can fit in my purse, just in case I should encounter an undrizzled breakfast food. It’s almost $10 for a top shelf very small bottle, compared to $2 a bottle of brown colored breakfast syrup.”
20.
“A washer and dryer in the house. Not having to go to the corner one or manage time sharing the building one is the best. And a separate dryer too, that way one load can be washing and another drying at the same time.”
21.
“Hot and clean water. Spend any time at all in a place without running clean water or constant good sewerage, and your perception of ‘luxury’ is seriously readjusted.”
22.
“Nice shoes. I used to buy three pairs of $20 shoes at a time, and they’d fall apart after three months. So I was spending $60 every three months or $240 a year on crap shoes. Now I buy two pairs of $120 shoes that last me for three or four years, and if the soles wear out, it’s $25 at the cobbler for new ones. They’re more comfortable, more stylish, and vastly more durable. I’m saving money by buying nicer things!”
23.
“The more expensive toilet paper. You can’t go back after buying that.”
