When I first started cooking, I genuinely thought “Italian Seasoning” was just…one magical Italian spice. Like oregano’s cooler cousin or something. Please keep in mind — being the youngest of four daughters — I was in elementary school when I started dabbling in the kitchen. At that time, I still believed in Santa, the tooth fairy…and that “a year lasts forever.” Fast-forward to when I moved out and started cooking for real, and imagine my shock: every “famous” seasoning is actually a blend of other herbs and spices. (I know, everyone knew but me, didn’t they?) Now, as any home cook will tell you, sometimes you just have to play chemist and make your own seasoning blends in a pinch.
So then I got thinking — how many home cooks actually know what’s really in those famous spice blends? Let’s find out! I’m about to put your spice-and-herb knowledge to the test.
