“Vaccines and having a baby. My mom remarried a very religious Christian MAGA man after my dad passed, and has since become a Christian nationalist herself and MAGA.”

“She also became anti-vax. While I was pregnant with my first kid and her first grandbaby, I asked if she could help me after a C-section and if she and her husband wanted to visit for Christmas. We even offered to pay for her flight to help us, and we have no other family near us to help. She promised me she wouldn’t miss it and would come help me postpartum, and would also be there for Christmas.

We asked everyone who would see the baby to get the COVID, flu, and TDAP shots to protect our newborn. She knew this and agreed, but changed her mind when I told her I needed the shingles vaccine post-birth. She told me I shouldn’t trust my doctors and then messaged my husband (a doctor) and told him she was no longer coming and refused to ever get any of the vaccines and told him she would meet her grandson when he was older. I was so hurt by her behavior, bailing on me when I was vulnerable and needed her, and choosing not to celebrate our baby’s first Christmas with us or even meet him. We told her we were hurt and needed to focus on the end of my pregnancy and our family, and she told me I was un-Christian for spreading negativity and for hurting HER, then told me she was fine no longer being in my life and unfriended both my husband and me from Facebook. 

My mom wasn’t particularly religious when I was a kid, and didn’t raise my brother and me to be either. So, it was all pretty shocking to hear her sound bite MAGA and turn it against me, and willingly choose not to meet her first grandson. She posts all the time on social media about her husband’s grandkids and calls them hers, so I guess she has her own grandkids now. My baby, husband, and I are probably better off.”
