Millennials have a reputation for decorating exclusively in gray, white, and farmhouse chic — but one millennial, u/Mewpasaurus, was not buying it. After moving into a mountain home and starting a DIY design journey, they wondered whether that aesthetic actually reflects how their generation lives. So they asked fellow millennials to share photos of their real homes. From colorful maximalism to cozy, lived-in spaces, the responses proved there is no single millennial interior design style:
1.
“Our interior design plan is putting stuff wherever and trying to keep as organized as possible. Throw a map and an anime poster up. Where do we put this table? I don’t know — just put it in the middle, I guess. Don’t forget the cat tower.”
2.
“My sitting room on a good day. It regularly gets too cluttered, and then I have to go around, put things in a box, and stick it in the loft.”
3.
“I don’t like beige and cannot stand the gray scale. This is my bedroom. We’ve got a pretty maximal gallery wall and lamps.”
4.
“Just finished redoing my living room.”
5.
“I decorated my basement to look like a medieval tavern. Still working on it, but it’s always improving!”
6.
“Here’s our dining room! My husband is the one who does all the decorating in this house. I have added some plants to the console table since! We have a lot of white and open, with some contrasting blacks and pops of green.”
7.
“Here’s my bedroom. I lean more masculine with design tastes and enjoy dark colors like Hale Navy (pictured here). I’ve done multiple rooms with focal walls, as well as color-drenched my dining room.”
8.
“Here’s the color-drenched dining room.”
9.
“Here’s my nursery, using succulents with natural murals.”
11.
“Here’s a taste of my home.”
12.
“My walls are the ubiquitous grey, but it’s because I like a lot of artwork hanging up.”
13.
“I know people cringe when they see the inside of my home. I love color.”
14.
“I like maximalism, too! By that I mean, maximizing the amount of dog hair, dog beds, and dog toys — also, kitschy junk.”
15.
“Ignore the wood chips on the floor. This is my parlor, and we work in here. The gray paint came with the house and will be dark red, soon — it will match the sofa (not pictured) and the rugs.”
17.
“Dining room, but still working on the table setting.”
18.
“Eccentric, I guess? The missus and I just put up whatever we like.”
19.
“My husband also does all of our decorating! Here’s our dining room.”
20.
“This is my (mildly messy) view right now. I don’t think I have an interior design style. If I do, it’s rural grandma.”
21.
“My yellow chair would go well in colorful houses.”
22.
“Our living room — though I’m struggling hard to find a rug I like.”
23.
“Most of what I get, I’ll buy at the secondhand store or on Facebook Marketplace. My bed and my dining room table/chairs are the only things I’ve bought new.”
24.
“Comfortable seating — and an orange garland I never took down after Christmas.”
25.
“We try to bring a natural look inside with some plants, green walls, wood floor, etc. Excuse the messy table.”
26.
“I’m a 40-year-old man. Mountain living. I hired a decorator. I’ve also got an airplane prop and some old school travel kinda posters. The vibe is a bit like a remote airfield.”
27.
“I do love my living room.”
28.
“Neutrals. Minimal stuff. We are in the process of updating and redoing parts of the house, so don’t mind the walls and lack of trim.”
29.
“This is my office, and I feel like it pretty accurately captures my approach to design. I like earthy tones with lots of plants, personal touches of art, and other treasures like gifts, photos, and thrifted pieces. There are very few commercial pieces in the house. Lots of color!”
30.
“I’m a big fan of color, texture, plants, and art. I have a home from the 1890s with some historic elements remaining, so that helps. Each room has its own palette, but they all pair well together.”
31.
“I really love how my son’s nursery came out. He loves it as well.”
32.
“Ours is more beach/modern/cozy?”
33.
“Elder millennial style. It hasn’t really changed since high school.”
34.
“Mid-century millennial is what we went for.”
35.
“Guilty as charged of the gray aesthetic.”
36.
“I don’t own a house, but I was very involved in my parents’ kitchen redesign after my dad accidentally set the old one on fire.”
37.
“My kitchen is probably my favorite room in my house after painting the dark wood cabinets (almost black) a light lilac-purple.”
From colorful maximalism to cozy, lived-in spaces, these homes prove that millennial design is anything but one-note. Any favorites? What does your place look like? Share in the comments below!
