“Credit cards and credit scores. Basically, all we were told was ‘Don’t get a credit card!’ and that was it. Well, I went to college, got my first credit card, maxed it out pretty quickly, and thought I was being smart by paying the minimum $25 a month on it. Meanwhile, I was racking up interest and owed more and more each month, and it took me years to realize what I had done. A number of other credit card mistakes led to my credit score tanking and being in the ‘very poor’ range, and almost kept me from being able to get an apartment in my mid-20s when I moved to a new city. Were the mistakes my fault? Absolutely, and looking back, I was incredibly irresponsible. But I really wish they had given us an in-depth look into credit cards, how they work, and how to avoid sinking into credit card debt in school. But then again, these were the same teachers who told us to take out all the student loans for college, and that we’d be able to pay them back when we got a job after college.”
