“Three words: Girls Gone Wild. Movies from that time were so steeped in the male gaze, sexualizing young women at every turn. You could practically hear the filmmakers panting as the camera panned and zoomed — so many shots of low-cut jeans and tight tops. The women and girls weren’t people, just objects (think: Carmen Electra). It was lowbrow humor for the ‘dude’ crowd with a dash of rom-com for the girls. We all shrugged it off as ‘boys will be boys,’ but watching it now just gives me the ick.”
“I love James Van Der Beek, but The Rules of Attraction (2002) is an abomination — a so-called ‘edgy’ movie that’s jarring in how casually it treats awful situations for the women in it. How that can be considered a dark comedy is beyond me. Totally abhorrent and god-awful. Whoever finds that funny is disturbed.”
