Let’s face it. Finding a partner can be rough, and one particular interaction on a dating platform is going viral on Reddit.
When he replied, the woman made her thoughts about his beard known, and then, according to u/barre9388, ghosted:
Now, users are calling out how toxic they believe this woman’s behavior is. And to take it a step further, some people are suggesting that what this woman did falls into the category of “negging.”
Negging is when someone gives a backhanded compliment or makes a subtle insult just to mess with your confidence. The twisted logic behind it is that if they make you feel a little insecure, you’ll suddenly be more desperate for their approval (and more likely to hook up with them).
And while some could argue that her behavior in the chat was not “negging,” others seem convinced that her actions were a form of it. u/Mysterious-Turnip916 said, “She’s the type of woman that wanted him to say, ‘I’ll shave it for you,’ like some bragging right to all her friends.”
People also seem to believe that this so-called negging behavior is actually kind of common. u/Bustin_Justin521 shared, “I used to have long curly hair, and I had multiple women message me to say they’d go on a date with me if I cut my hair.”
Men then begin sharing that they believe they have had a lot of negging-like experiences with women, like u/pizzaduh, who shared, “I had a woman ask if I had custody of my son, and when I said 50/50, she said ‘eww.’ Like, what?”
On the other hand, maybe the woman was just being upfront about not liking beards. I mean, after all, we have seen some pretty toxic dating interactions from men that actually fit the definition of negging…like this:
So, we want to know your thoughts. Do you think what this woman said should be considered “negging”? Have you experienced so-called “negging” before? Let us know in the comments!
