1.
First up, we need to talk about how big moose are. I kind of thought they were just a little bit bigger than deer. Boy, was I wrong. Moose can be up to seven feet tall.
2.
Wolves are also WAY bigger than I thought. Check out one next to a husky for scale.
3.
On the other hand, the terrifying-looking anglerfish are actually quite small. I’d still like to keep my distance, though.
4.
Speaking of size…this is the woman who holds the record for the widest female mouth. Her name is Sam Ramsdell, and her mouth measures just over 4 inches wide.
5.
Did you know Mike Tyson’s neck measured 20 inches in the ’80s?
6.
You can check out the kind of exercises he did to get a neck like that below. My neck is sore just looking at this.
7.
Similarly, I’m kind of in awe of how much a ballerina’s foot can stretch.
8.
This dog, who was born with a little tail on its forehead, is equal parts fascinating and cute.
9.
These conjoined turtles are also fascinating yet wildly cute.
10.
Did you know that cats can have muscular hypertrophy? Basically, they’ll get super buff.
11.
You can see another example here. I feel like this cat’s name is Chad, and he’s going to steal my girl.
12.
Speaking of massive muscles, check out this bodybuilder flexing their thigh muscles. Freaky, right?
13.
Seeing a four-megabyte hard drive from 1965 is wild because it shows us how far we’ve come. For reference, the smallest storage size for an iPhone is 64 gigabytes or 64,000 megabytes. And it fits in the palm of your hand.
14.
Thia photo is short-circuiting my brain. That person’s hand is underwater — but the water is so clear you almost can’t tell. (Check out the waterline on their wrist if you’re doubtful.) The picture was taken in Sweden.
15.
This photo of the aftermath of an earthquake in Turkey feels like something out of a disaster movie.
16.
Volcanic lightning also feels like something that would be made up for a disaster film, but it’s 100% real.
17.
Lightning’s power is pretty incredible. These photos were taken just seconds apart. In the first photo, lightning makes it look like daytime.
18.
Seeing a tornado this close makes me glad I’ve never lived in the Midwest.
19.
On a happier note, check out what a sunrise during a solar eclipse looks like!
20.
Here’s what Mt. Rushmore looks like from far away. It seems a lot more underwhelming, tbh.
21.
Also, here’s what Mt. Rushmore looked like before it was carved.
22.
Here’s a view of the Statue of Liberty from above — you actually used to be able to climb to the torch and view the statue from this angle!
23.
Check out another interesting view from a weird angle — this is what people on a translucent dance floor look like from below.
24.
Here’s what it looks like to be on the other side of a movie screen.
25.
Seeing 1500 Jenga blocks balanced on a single block made me feel pretty bad about my own Jenga skills, but it’s still pretty cool. This actually broke a world record.
26.
Another wildly interesting world record? Longest eyelashes. You Jianxia’s eyelashes are EIGHT INCHES long.
27.
Have you ever wondered how a record player works? Here, you can see a close-up of how the needle goes over the grooves, creating vibrations that are translated into sound.
28.
This assisted living facility that looks like an old-school town is a cool idea, but it also kind of freaks me out. Do residents feel like they’re on The Truman Show?
29.
This snail with a clear shell is giving ~effervescent~. (IYKYK.)
30.
Here’s what gorilla hands look like up close — and how they look compared to human ones.
31.
Bald eagle nests are also WAY bigger than I would’ve thought.
32.
Elephant tails up close are wayyyy freakier-looking than I would’ve guessed.
33.
Same with kangaroo pouches.
34.
And chickens’ feathers growing.
35.
Ever wondered what the inside of a pine cone looks like?
36.
What about the inside of a hornet’s nest?
37.
Or the inside of a spacesuit?
39.
Here’s what a sun pillar looks like. They’re created from ice crystals in the air reflecting the sun, usually during sunrise or sunset.
40.
Here’s another example that looks straight-up magical.
41.
TIL there’s such a thing as a colorless rainbow. It happens with smaller water droplets — the light is diffracted rather than refracted, and you don’t get the colors.
42.
I also learned today about the “Brocken spectre,” which is basically seeing your shadow in a cloud, surrounded by a rainbow ring. It only occurs in the right conditions at high altitudes.
44.
Check out these awesome pics of helicopters during sandstorms that look straight out of Dune. The way they create “halos” is called The Kopp–Etchells effect.
45.
Check out how fast famous figure skater Lucinda Ruh could spin back in 1999. She used to be the fastest spinner in the world and said she actually got concussions from spinning so fast.
46.
This GIF gave me SO much appreciation for what puppeteers do.
47.
On the subject of puppets, this old photo of what Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street used to look like is wild. He’s terrifying. They showed this to kids???
48.
While we’re talking about original versions, here’s the first Pizza Hut. It opened in 1958 in Kansas.
49.
Did you know that McDonald’s used to have only one arch? You can check out a ~vintage~ version of their sign at this McDonald’s in Detroit.
50.
This car that looks like it’s upside down is actually breaking my brain.
51.
As is this concrete that looks like wood.
52.
I didn’t even know a layer of your tongue COULD peel, but apparently, it can, and this is what it looks like.
53.
These rocks frozen in water look like a glitch in the matrix. Why were they still floating when the water froze???
54.
This translucent leaf is also messing with my brain. It looks like ice, but it’s actually a result of the leafy parts breaking down faster than the veins.
55.
I don’t know why, but this training area for telephone linemen is cracking me up. It literally never occurred to me that there’d be a need for this.
56.
This pregnant ferret is also super funny to see, especially considering how thin and tubular ferrets normally are.
57.
Did you know there’s such a thing as a white giraffe?
58.
I’ve heard polydactyl cats, but this cat, who basically has an extra mini paw, feels way wilder.
59.
Did you know a gecko’s ears are just a hole that goes straight through their head? You can check it out below.
60.
Ever wonder what escalator steps look like outside of an escalator?
61.
And finally…here’s one of the world’s most painful plants, which looks weirldy innocuous. But don’t be fooled — this baby can cause intense, long-term pain.
