On the surface, you might not have any reason to suspect that there’s some sort of beef going on between comedian Kathy Griffin and actor Jon Hamm. To wit — here’s a pic of them mugging it up at the Emmys in 2009:
But during a recent appearance on In Your Dreams, Kathy told host Owen Thiele that she’s actually had a problem with Jon — or, as she refers to him, “Hammy” — for a minute now, and the reason is pretty surprising.

Strangely enough, this story also involves legendary actor Jack Nicholson, as Kathy says that her beef with “Hammy” originates from a convo she had with Jack at a dinner thrown by late, legendary talent agent Sue Mengers.
“So I’m at Sue Mengers’ party and she would have us eat around the coffee table instead of the dining table, which was even more intimate,” she said. “And I had met Jack a couple of times, but I was shy around him because he’s Jack Nicholson.”
“And so one time we were at the party and he turns to me, he says, ‘Kathy,’ and I’m like, ‘Whoa, he knows my name,’ and so he started talking about making the movie The Departed, which I think is a classic, and I’ve seen it many times, and so I’m in a conversation where Jack, who normally doesn’t talk about his work at all, he usually talks about how he’s f–king, which is also interesting. But anyway, he’s talking about playing a Whitey Bulger type character and Whitey Bulger had just been found and arrested after decades of being on the run and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my god, Jack Nicholson is talking about the one topic I would want to ask him about.’”
“And then Hammy was wasted, so he’s next to me in my ear and he’s going, ‘You’re so old. What’s it like to be so old? You know your Emmys are fake Emmys?’ And I go, ‘No, Hammy, and you don’t even have an Emmy.’”
“And then I turned back to Jack who missed the whole thing, but I never forgave Hammy for that.”
Yikes. Now, Kathy’s a comedian, and Jon is known for his fair share of jokes as well — so maybe this was a misunderstanding? Either way, I feel like we’re bound to hear from Jon on this one at some point. To be continued…
