So, in case you missed it: Netflix just announced a six-part Pride and Prejudice adaptation — and the internet has opinions. My mother-in-law swears no version will ever top the BBC ’90s Colin Firth classic. I feel the same way about the 2005 Keira Knightley film (nostalgia might be clouding my judgment, but whatever). Will I binge the new Netflix version? 1000%. Will it dethrone my faves? Unless Greta Gerwig is secretly directing, probably not. But with Dolly Alderton (writer extraordinaire) and Euros Lyn (AKA the director of a personal favourite, Heartstopper) behind it, maybe my skepticism is premature.
With Netflix’s new Pride and Prejudice on the horizon, it feels like the perfect time to brush up on Jane Austen’s deliciously tricky vocabulary. How’d you do? Drop your score in the comments — and let us know your favourite Jane Austen book. Full disclosure: I’ve only read Pride and Prejudice, so I’m biased. But god, do I love it. Plus, the 2005 Keira Knightley version is my ultimate comfort movie. It works in literally every situation — heartbreak, a head cold, date night, wine-and-whine nights with your friends…or when you need the film equivalent of a hug.
