Hilary Duff the pop star is back! She recently released luck… or something — her first album in over a decade — and has been on the promo circuit, which means we’ve been blessed with a whole bunch of new Hilary content, featuring insights into who she is and where she’s at in her late 30s.
While appearing on the On Purpose podcast recently, hosted by wellness influencer Jay Shetty, Hilary opened up about a number of tough topics — including her divorce from her first husband, NHL player Mike Comrie.
Hilary and Mike were married in 2010 and had a son, Luca, in 2012 before separating in 2014. Their divorce was finalized in 2016.
When Jay asked what lessons Hilary had learned from her first marriage, she said that while she doesn’t “love” to talk about it, she’s been “pretty open about being a divorced person and what that’s like, and being a single mom.”
“Choosing to end a family is a huge, horrible choice to make,” Hilary said. “This is before ‘conscious uncoupling’ was coined, and we really tried to do that. I really tried to do that.”
Hilary went on to talk about co-parenting with her ex, saying “I also co-parent with that person, and we do a great job mostly. Sometimes there’s bumps and frustrations — again, [it] ebbs and flows. But we adore this person that we created and we do a great job.”
Hilary talked about how hard her own parents’ divorce was on everyone in her family, causing her to make an effort to handle her own divorce differently. “There was a lot of fighting, it was not like they could hang out and be in the same room,” Hilary said of her parents. “So when it came to me getting divorced, I was like, I’m not gonna have that. We’re going to do holidays together as much as we can. Not that it was always easy, but it felt way easier than the alternative.”
“You just grow,” Hilary said. “And I think I did.”
After her divorce, Hilary did find love again, with singer-songwriter and producer Matthew Koma. The pair married in 2019 and have three daughters together, in addition to Hilary’s son with Mike. Matthew also worked with Hilary on luck… or something, which explores their relationship, amongst other things. On the podcast, Hilary told Jay Shetty that her relationship with Matthew is an “emotional shelter” for her, rather than something fueled by drama, as she experienced in the past.
Personally, I am so here for a thriving, 30-something Hilary!
