Former Skeptics Are Revealing Their Brutally Honest Hypnosis Experiences

“I went to a hypnotist show back in high school, and was one who got picked to go up on stage. I’d say I sort of got hypnotized. The initial parts where we were getting sleepy and such happened quite naturally to me. I generally followed along with what I was told to do, but part-way through, I realized I wasn’t really hypnotized, but continued to just play along with it. I was friends with a few of the other hypnotized people, and I tried quietly asking them questions that might gauge how actually hypnotized they were. My conclusion was that yes, it worked.”

“For example, they genuinely seemed to forget the things he told them to forget. (He ‘suggested’ that we offer to help him load some equipment into his car after the show — every person I asked afterwards thought it believable that he might have planted that suggestion, but absolutely did not remember him doing so.)

So I’d say it works for some people, but definitely not for everyone. You have to willingly give the hypnotist control. If you get hypnotized to quit smoking, or lose weight, I think it might help get you started, but it’s up to you to make the real effort, and the fact that you were once hypnotized won’t make you do something you otherwise couldn’t.”
