“Let me caveat this by saying I am horrified of needles to the point of panic and nightmares about them. I have C-PTSD from other things as an adult, but medical needles still terrify me. Tattoo or piercing needles don’t scare me one bit, but for some reason, a giant hypodermic needle induces abject terror. At 12 years old, I went for a yearly checkup and routine vaccinations. My mom and the nurse were chit-chatting as the nurse prepared my MMR vaccination and was updating my vaccination card, which she handed to my mom to keep. As my mom stashed the paperwork away, the nurse approached me with the vaccine and asked me to make sure she could reach my bicep. I let her, and we laughed about my fear of needles, well known to my doctor and his staff. She swabbed the area, still good. She jabbed me. I ran, like hell.”
“All around the whole office, a needle full of MMR flapping in my bicep. The doctor, my mother, and the nurse all chased me around the whole practice until the nurse finally got the chance to tackle me like a linebacker, and then removed the needle. The worst part of this was that I still needed the vaccine for school and sports, so I had to get the shot anyway. The nurse had to prep a second shot and give it to me, probably with a little extra oomph for being such a jerk. I deserved it, if she didn’t. I won’t ever forget that hot mess. I’m sure my physician won’t, either. He’s still a pediatrician and now sees my son as a patient. The doctor was sure to tell my kid all about how ridiculous his mom behaved when she got her MMR shot.”
