“Fun fact: In Japan, it’s discourteous to hand money to someone, and cashiers use a little tray to do the job. When I worked as a cashier, I asked people to do the same. It’s easier to count coinage from the counter; it means that the cameras above the counter can see the whole transaction, and it reduces physical contact — especially important during things like global pandemics.”
