Don’t ask Madonna what happens in the stage show Hamilton.
Anthony cited a 2015 incident in response. “The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face. She was like this the whole time,” Anthony said, mimicking looking down at a screen.
He added, “I was like, ‘Damn, shorty. If you’re not enjoying it that much, you know the door is right there. You don’t have to stay here.’”
The moment occurred during the show’s Off-Broadway run at The Public Theater. Interestingly, at the time Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted-and-deleted, “Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage #noselfieforyou.”
A rep for Madonna subsequently denied the speculation. However, Jonathan Groff was later asked if he was disappointed that Madonna wasn’t allowed backstage, to which he said, “No. Because that bitch was on her phone. You couldn’t miss it from the stage. It was a black void of the audience in front of us and her face there perfectly lit by the light of her iPhone through three-quarters of the show.”
There we have it: The rehashing of a decade-old Broadway beef.
