“My school district is in a very affluent town, but we’re broke. The previous superintendent spent a lot of temporary funds like they were permanent; our current district office staff keeps giving themselves huge bonuses and promoting from within — despite their lack of experience, which means they spend thousands on coaches to train them. They also ballooned the spending on lawyers from $3 million to $10 million in the last couple years. And their solution? Lay off teachers, increase class sizes, and plan to eliminate counselors in the next couple years. I’ve seen this countless times before in low-income areas I’ve worked in, but the only problem is…it’s an affluent area. The parents are pissed and have time and money to fight back.”
