Well, an Olympian is going viral for his post-win interview — and it’s not exactly for the sport.
Norway’s Sturla Holm Lægreid won bronze in the men’s 20km biathlon, after which he gave an interview with the country’s public broadcaster, NRK. When asked about how he felt after scoring a medal, he replied, “I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way…my whole family for supporting me.”
Pretty standard, no? “There is something I want to share with someone who may not be watching today,” he then said, promptly tearing up. “Half a year ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful and nicest person. Three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago.”
“This has been the worst week of my life,” he continued. “I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”
He then told a Norweigen newspaper, “My only way to solve it is to tell everything and put everything on the table, and hope that she can still love me…I’ve done that for her, and now for the whole world. I have nothing to lose. I want to be a good role model, but I have to admit when I make mistakes.”
Well…I’m sure she heard you loud and clear, buddy!
