New York-based wedding photographer Lauren O’Brien has photographed couples who have since gotten divorced, and the ones where she “kind of knew it wasn’t going to last” involved drunk grooms, she said.
O’Brien recalled one drunk groom who got “so intoxicated to the point where during their photo session — which is well before the ceremony in most cases — he couldn’t stand up,” she said. “And we had to cut it short, because he ended up throwing up in the bushes… And I did later find out that he had been cheating on her the entire time.”
For photographers, there’s a difference between drinking on your wedding to toast to a momentous day and drinking to forget where you are.
“Obviously have a good time, but I think if you’re sloppy and blackout, I start to go, ‘Oh, I don’t know if you’re excited about this anymore,’” said Cincinnati, Ohio-based wedding photographer Megan Noll. “I had a groom one time where he was just drinking whiskey by the glassful, and the bride got really frustrated, and walked out of the reception.”
