“It was the early 2000s, and junk mail was at an all-time high. I was a busy college student who worked 30 hours a week, took 15 credits, and was doing an internship. I moved in with my boyfriend at the time, and needless to say, my mail piled up. I get that it was annoying, but rather than asking me directly to deal with it or…I don’t know…helping me because I was stretched really thin, he bought me a paper shredder for Christmas. Talk about passive-aggressive!”
“A few years later, he kept hinting that I was getting an engagement ring for my birthday, and he even told my freaking sister about it! A few weeks before my birthday, he suggested that we soft-launch our engagement at our friends’ housewarming party. I declined because it was weird, but also, the couple had told us in confidence that they were going to announce their engagement at the party as a surprise. When my birthday rolled around, I got a gift card and felt like a total idiot.”
