“A guy we knew and was a huge part of the circle my husband and I ran with, and told everyone he had an aggressive stomach cancer and was receiving treatment for three years. We knew him for about a year. He was hanging out with our friends because my husband’s best friend brought this guy along, and he fit in well with the group. Really well. Really nice guy. We stopped going out because I got pregnant. So obviously, I couldn’t go out much anymore. My husband was a first-time dad and kind of hovered over me a lot, so he didn’t go out much either. Our baby was born happy and healthy, and when they were 18 months old, we got a call from my husband’s bestie with shocking news.”
“He tells us this guy, whom we all included in our group, had his life fall apart because he cheated on his girlfriend, and she told everyone what she knew. It was all over socials and some texts. The truth came out hard and fast. He never, ever had cancer in the first place and just enjoyed the treatment people gave him and the coddling he could get from it. 😬 No, my husband and I never suspected a thing. Why would we? You don’t ask or accuse someone of something like that in passing. But it was like he was a whole different person with a second life, and we just never noticed. It was unsettling and grotesque. Still makes my hair stand up.”
