“When I was a kid, my parents were friends with a childless couple. The wife was a nurse, and the husband was a pharmacist. They had lots of money and timeshares in a resort town 70 miles away. They would invite us to spend the weekend with them at the timeshare. Since I usually had to work late, I would come up in my own car, and they would usually have already eaten. The nurse had a habit of going through garbage behind the grocery stores and then cooking the food she found. My mom would have to tell me things like ‘Don’t eat the rice, there’s glass in it.’ They owned race horses, and when we would go to special events, the nurse would take plastic storage containers and take the food off people’s tables home and eat and serve it.”
