“I was a member of a mega-church for 18 years. The first straw was when they let my ex become an ‘alpha’ leader and allowed him to publish a story about the end of our relationship in the church news, which was very one-sided and embarrassed me.”
“The next straw was forcing out beloved pastors, specifically a lesbian pastor. Then the senior pastor used his sermon to express anti-Muslim views. Promisekeepers were also implemented, and made it so that only men could pray for the church. I kept sending my prayer request that they become enlightened and treat women equally.
My final straw came when a young new pastor was hired and wrote an anti-LGBT article in the church paper. I felt like we went from a truly inclusive, welcoming church to a white, male-dominated, racist, anti-gay cult-like club. What was once a church of over 8000 members is now down to 1000.
I no longer believe in organized religion, period. There’s a special place in hell for the people at that church!”
