“At the end of August 1939, my mom and uncle were in Hamburg, having a lovely time and getting spoiled rotten. Their grandfather, however, was not having a lovely time — he had a bad feeling and called their mother in the UK. Hitler had been in power for a couple of years, but things were heating up militarily, and their grandfather was sure war was fast approaching.

Typically, the two siblings traveled back and forth by ferry, but this time, their grandfather was really worried and managed to get them two plane tickets for a flight from Hamburg to Croydon, stopping in Copenhagen for fuel. I can’t imagine what that cost in terms of money and favors.

Anyway, they flew back to the UK on a Sunday. The following Friday, Hitler invaded Poland.”
