17 Older Adults Share Stories About Their TOXIC Bosses From "Back In The Day"

11.

“When I was 19, I had a job in the mortgage department of a savings and loan. It was in a great downtown location and employed many people around my age, which made it fun. Unfortunately, I had the boss from hell.”

“Not only was she an outspoken racist (she once asked a biracial co-worker a VERY inappropriate question), but she seemed to just hate everybody. You had to be careful of what you said to her, because it would eventually get lobbed back at you, covered in venom.

My mistake was telling her that I was taking night school classes, in an attempt to continue my education after dropping out of college in my sophomore year. I simply asked if I could work through my lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I could leave early and not have to rush to school.

Her reply? ‘Yeah, but I don’t know why you’re even bothering. It’s obvious to everyone you’re dumber than a box of rocks.’

Younger people may wonder how she got away with saying the things she did. The explanation is that it was 1979, and there were absolutely zero rules against using hate speech and insulting language toward employees.”
