17 Brutally Honest Takes On Famous Tourist Destinations That People Hate With a Passion

“Times Square 1000%. 20 years ago, it was cleaned up. It was much more pleasant to go with a family, and going to shows around there wasn’t a problem. Lots of good things and lots of bad things have happened in the last 50 years of NYC leadership, but getting Times Square clean, installing the bleachers, making the TKTS ticket booth accessible, making it not a scary subway stop, and slowing the wild traffic… that was awesome. Because, as much as it sucks now, it really was amazing then to just stand and look around and gawk at the billboards and see the mounted police everywhere.

“Sure, there were still weird people doing weird things, but they weren’t defecating and peeing and scaring people to the point where people would actively say “don’t go to Times Square.” But it was much less because there was a huge police presence.

I used to have to walk to work through Times Square around 2005. The only real problem was the tourists with cameras who wouldn’t move as I was trying to get to meetings. I didn’t fault them; I was that same person before I moved here.

To see Times Square fall back makes me sad.”
