Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite shows, no doubt. It came out decades ago, and it still hits, especially when it’s cold out and there’s a good reason to curl up and binge watch. But the show has its own share of problematic references and moments—those that truly haven’t aged well for a show that is so iconic.
Here are some of the most problematic moments in Gilmore Girls that make me cringe:
1.
When Rory fat shamed a woman for no apparent reason.
2.
When Lorelai fat shamed a woman she hadn’t even met.
3.
When Lorelai said *this* when asked why she didn’t go to the gym when she had a membership card.
4.
When Rory fat shamed a ballerina as part of her ‘review’.
5.
The whole idea that Lorelai and Rory could eat whatever they want, not gain weight, and still look good.
6.
Additionally, neither Lorelai nor Rory knew how to cook, which was made to look quirky.
7.
When Lane Kim’s terrible character arc resulted in her having a weird, conservative attitude towards sex.
8.
When Lorelai and Rory used ableist terms and thought it was normal.
9.
When mental health was a running joke throughout the show.
10.
Whatever the hell this was.
11.
When Luke couldn’t comprehend that a man can have a purse.
12.
Several anti-LGBTQ+ elements were woven into the show, for no apparent reason.
13.
When Sookie scheduled a vasectomy without Jackson’s consent, and he lied about getting it done.
14.
When Emily was borderline racist towards Richard’s nurse.
15.
And finally, when Lorelai said this upon finding out that Rory wasn’t having sex.
