HBO / YouTube / Via youtube.com In the pilot episode, Joel invites Sam to "Choir Practice," an invite-only-on-the-low event that provides a safe space for people looking for community. Joel pumps up Sam, calling her "one of his favorite singers in the world," and backs her on Kate Bush's "Don't Give Up." It's the start of their friendship, and reignites Sam's love of singing.
In season one, episode 2, Sam starts to pull away from her budding friendship with Joel due to her vulnerability issues. After trying to crush Joel’s dreams about his future in Kansas, she comes to his place to apologize.
