“I had a guy with whom I was really close at the beginning of our freshman year at college. He’s gay, and I’m a lesbian, and we were both going to a religious university specifically for a niche major. Our friendship didn’t last long, as I saw how he treated the women in our friend group and the backlash he gave me when I stood up to him. He would constantly smack our butts or ask to touch our boobs, but wouldn’t take no for an answer. One day, I told him not to touch me, and he smacked my butt in front of our class, causing me to yell at him, but suddenly, I was the problem.”

“He called women ‘bitches’ and ‘sluts’ and objectified us to no end. He would gossip about girls, whom he called his friends, and pitted us against each other. He ended friendships with others because they voted me into a club officer position he wanted. A lot of other people let him get away with it because he’s their stereotypical token gay friend, and he used that to his advantage as an excuse for his behavior.

He was supposed to be my ally, and he only treated me like an object to be used for entertainment. When I finally ended the friendship, he spent the next three and a half years telling anyone he could about how I was jealous of him and his success, telling them that I woke up every morning praying that I’d be like him.”
