“For me, I knew it was time to walk away when I realized I was the only one truly trying to move things forward. I was with my ex for almost four years, we lived together for two, and even shared a dog. I’m loyal, committed, and genuinely want to build something lasting with a partner. But he always seemed ‘afraid’ to take the next step. Every time we discussed timelines or plans for the future, he’d push things off or make jokes instead of taking it seriously. I eventually broke up with him, even though it felt like I was giving up on someone I deeply cared about.”

“Then, just two weeks later, he gained interest in someone else. That hurt, but it also made things really clear. I had been holding on to something that wasn’t actually working. Looking back now, I can see how one-sided and exhausting the relationship really was. He was often negative, judged me a lot, and, honestly, living with him sometimes felt like taking care of a kid. I was constantly reminding him to do basic chores or handle things any adult should manage. I used to tell myself he was struggling with his mental health (which was true), but that still didn’t make it okay for me to carry the whole relationship.

I had to message his friend to get his mail redirected because he never did it himself, and when I gave him a week to pack up his stuff, he didn’t. My friends and I ended up spending five hours packing everything for him. With some space and clarity, I’ve realized things weren’t as good as I thought. I stayed because I believed in his potential, but in the end, it felt like I was raising him instead of being with him. I hate saying it, but he really was a man-child. So, I guess my answer is that you know it’s time to walk away when you’re constantly pouring into someone who doesn’t (or can’t) meet you halfway, and when peace starts to sound better than ‘trying’ again.”
