You don’t need me to tell you that Meghan Markle has been subjected to years of relentless and baseless scrutiny by the UK media ever since she married Prince Harry back in 2018, with multiple public figures relishing in using their platforms to make vile comments about the Duchess of Sussex.
And in 2021, Piers Morgan sensationally stormed off the popular UK breakfast show Good Morning Britain when his frustrated costar Alex Beresford dared to call out his daily trashing of Meghan, accusing Piers of having a personal vendetta against the duchess after he wasn’t invited to the royal wedding, having met her precisely twice.
This heated confrontation happened after Meghan revealed in her and Harry’s bombshell Oprah interview that she had considered suicide when she was pregnant with Archie as a result of the extensive abuse she had endured. Piers had already been regularly criticizing Meghan on Good Morning Britain by this point, and the day after the interview aired, he cruelly dismissed her comments about her mental health and said he didn’t believe she felt suicidal.
Alex said: “I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme. I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one, and she cut you off… She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her.”
And this clearly hit a nerve, with Piers dramatically standing up and saying: “OK, I’m done with this.” He then made his way to the studio exit as he added: “Sorry, see you later, I can’t do this.”
Alex was visibly emotional at the time, telling the other presenters: “Absolutely diabolical behavior, I’m sorry but Piers spouts off on a regular basis and we all have to sit here and listen. From 6.30 to 7 a.m. yesterday, it was incredibly hard to watch.”
It’s worth noting that Alex did not have a personal relationship with Meghan at this time, and had never met or spoken with her. Meghan herself hasn’t ever publicly acknowledged what happened on Good Morning Britain, but it appears that Alex’s defense of her did not go unnoticed.
On Thursday, Alex took to his Instagram page to reveal that the Duchess of Sussex sent him a sweet gift for his new baby, Camille, as well as products from her As Ever range. Sharing a photo of the As Ever products to his Instagram story, Alex wrote: “Can’t wait to try this! Thank you so much @meghan…”
He then followed up with a photo of his baby daughter’s hand clutching onto the tentacle of an adorable octopus stuffed toy and added: “…And for Camille’s sweet gift!”
And considering it has been more than four years since Alex and Piers’s dramatic GMB stand-off, it’s fair to say that this proves Meghan has a long memory for the people who are in her corner.
