Palestinian health authorities report that Israel’s ground and air campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 50,000 people since the war began on Oct. 7, 2023. The conflict erupted after Hamas launched an attack that left approximately 1,200 people dead and 251 taken hostage. BBC reports that the conflict has likely damaged almost 60% of Gazan buildings.
In January, Israel and Hamas agreed to a six-week ceasefire, which is set to expire this weekend. The uncertainty surrounding the truce’s extension leaves the fate of Gaza’s civilians in limbo.
