On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., for a ceremony honoring the penny after the US Mint discontinued its production in November.
Some people (this lady) literally couldn’t handle it.
Selfies with Lincoln were had.
There was even a celebration of life ceremony.
They had Lincoln family descendants speak.
There were programs outlining the ceremony.
And a ton of people gathered around a coffin to mourn a coin.
That’s where people tossed in pennies as a final gesture of respect.
People even shared their favorite memories of the currency, “I’ll always remember my first penny press at the zoo. I will miss the lucky pennies.”
Someone brought an oversized penny.
And this guy wore a print out of Lincoln on a top hat.
