“It looks like it could be used to interpret package markings that correspond to the date of packaging. Alignment holes to orient the gauge, and markings (ink dots, hole punches, notches, etc) line up with the readout.

Such a system could have been used to obfuscate the freshness of the product from end consumers while letting people in the supply chain know what they’re buying.”
