The Way “Melania” Is Doing Internationally Is… Something

The Melania movie comes out this week and the hype is… not there.

As we’ve been saying, the movie was bought for $40 million, and then they’re pumping another $35 million into the advertising.

Response has been abysmal, and it’s becoming somewhat of a meme to post pictures of empty theaters.

That said, it’s predicted that the movie will take in $1-5 million in its opening week.

For some reason, the movie is also being released internationally. There have been billboards in places like London:

There have been some pretty wild stories about how it’s doing overseas, so let’s take a look!

First of all, it was pulled from theaters in South Africa.

The South African distributor told the New York Times, “Based on recent developments, we’ve taken the decision to not go ahead with a theatrical release in territory.”

In the UK, the Guardian is reporting that ticket sales are “soft” with just one ticket sold for the first screening and two for the second.

In Scotland, it’s worse. Only 20 tickets sold there.

The Herland newspaper reported that out of 1,916 seats for sale only 20 (!!) have been bought.

People in Spain are sharing pictures of empty theaters.

In Ireland, it’s much of the same.

And lastly, Canada. Spoiler alert: it’s a ghost town.

“Seven showings of Melania in Vancouver on its first day Friday – and at every single one, the two taken seats are the ones I entered to see how many tickets had been sold (four shown here). With hundreds available, not one ticket sold. Rerunning Gigli would be a bigger draw.”

“All but two seats available across four showings for ‘Melania’ in Montreal.”
