The first trailer for Nia DaCosta’s new film Hedda – which sees Tessa Thompson taking on the iconic titular role – just dropped, and it’s even better than we could’ve imagined.
Based on Henrik Ibsen’s classic play Hedda Gabler, the story follows newlywed Hedda as she hosts a party in her luxurious home with her husband, George (Tom Bateman).
On the surface, Hedda has everything she’s supposed to want, but inside, she’s restless, calculating, and dangerously dissatisfied. And when she’s reunited with someone from her past, things take a chaotic (and steamy) turn.
Now, you might be familiar with the story, but Nia DaCosta’s reimagining (which is set around the year 1954) has an exciting twist: Eilert Lövborg, who was George’s rival, has been rewritten as Eileen Lovborg (played by Nina Hoss), and she’s openly in a relationship with another woman.
And if the trailer is anything to go by, this complicated, queer love triangle is going to be intense.
