The singer — best known for her 2023 song “Greedy” and for her feature on Morgan Wallen’s No. 1 hit “What I Want” — recently appeared in an NBC ad featuring Team USA athletes, which led some people to call out the Canadian star for not supporting her own country.
One comment with over 10,000 likes read, “girl you’re canadian pls what is this.” Another person said that the ad gave them “the absolute ick.”
“Ur Canadian but promoting America for the Olympics???” one person wondered. “This is so disappointing lmao.”
Another added that it was especially upsetting “during times like these,” seemingly referring to recent tensions between Canada and the US.
“No amount of money could make me endorse the country that threatens mine,” one person said, while another called Tate a “sad Canada sellout.”
The backlash extended to celebrities, including actor and comedian Jack Innanen, who called out Tate directly on his Instagram Story. In a video, Jack said that he was “disappointed” in Tate for supporting the US over Canada during this time, calling her actions “traitor shit.” The Boys actor Tanner Zipchen also spoke out against the ad, writing in Tate’s comments, “Did you drop your Canadian Citizenship in the snow?”
Amid the backlash, Tate took to Instagram to make her stance clear. She posted a childhood photo of herself holding a miniature Canadian flag, which she simply captioned, “Y’all know I’m Canada down.”
She also told GQ in 2024 that she “one hundred percent” credits her Calgary upbringing for the person she has become today.
